Philippe Coutinho was carried off on a stretcher during Liverpool’s 2-0
victory over Sunderland on Saturday.
Coutinho is hopeful of
returning from an ankle injury for Liverpool’s New Year’s Eve showdown with
Manchester City.
Coutinho was spotted going into hospital for a scan yesterday afternoon using crutches with his foot in a protective boot.
And while the Brazilian believes he could make a comeback this year, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admits he will be certainly be out for five weeks.
“Phil needs between five and a few
weeks until we have him back,” Klopp told BBC
Radio 5 Live.
“We will see. He is not in for tonight and for the next few games.”
Klopp has made eight changes from the Liverpool team that beat Sunderland 2-0 on Saturday, the game in which Coutinho was injured, to face Leeds in their EFL Cup quarter-final tonight (7.45pm).
Emre Can, Georginio Wijnaldum and Saido Mane are the only players to keep their places, as the likes of Divock Origi, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ovie Ejaria get run-outs.

Klopp added: “Roberto [Firmino] couldn’t play.
“The same with Joel Matip and a few other players had all the games until now – we can bring in fresh legs, especially in defence.
“In attack, we have not that number of options anymore but I’m fine with the options we have. So we start with this line-up, we have a strong bench and we want to go to the semis.”
