Kenya television journalist arrested filming Uganda clashes

A journalist working for Kenya’s KTN television was Monday arrested Kasese for alleged illegal filming of military raid on Uganda’s Rwenzururu palace.
Uganda’s Kasese Central Police Station confirmed the arrest and detention of Ms Doreen Biira of the Kenya Television Network.

The Rwenzori Regional Police spokesman, Mr Manshur Suwed, said Ms Biira was arrested alongside five other people for illegally filming military engagement with royal guards of the Bakonzo king, Wesley Mumbere.
“She was arrested by police officers at the scene because she was illegally filming military activities which the media had been restricted to capture on camera,” Mr Suwed said.
He said Ms Biira was safe in police hands alongside her relatives and would be released on bond in course of the day.
However, Mr Suwed could not reveal which charges had been placed against the journalist.
Ms Biira was covering the clashes in Kasese that have left at least 55 people, including 14 security personnel, killed and more than 100 royal guards arrested.
Ms Biira was reportedly in in the area for her traditional wedding when she posted a video of the burning palace on her Instagram account.
